The Women’s Guide to Tennis Underwear

By: Caroline White

Men’s tennis shorts almost always come equipped with pockets to hold tennis balls during play. But what about the ladies? Though skirts and dresses don’t often feature pockets, there are several secure methods of ball storage to choose from. We’ve broken down your options in one handy dandy blog!

There are many skirts and shorts that come with built-in tights perfect for trapping tennis balls between the stretchy fabric and your skin for easy access. They also provide full coverage to keep you feeling confident as you play. Just about every major brand features skirts with built-in ball shorts, but we especially like the Nike Women’s Four Pleated Knit Skirt (4), Nike Victory Skirt (6), Fila Baseline Tennis Skort, Asics Advantage Tennis Skort, and the K-Swiss Mesh Pleat Tennis Skirt. Nike, in particular, does a great job of constructing built-in tights that won’t ride up as you move around the court.

Though some women’s tennis shorts have convenient pockets, some also feature built-in tights. The Nike Women’s Printed Woven Tennis Short (1), Under Armour Women’s Great Escape II Short, adidas Women’s Stella McCartney Barricade 2.5 Inch Tennis Short (3), and the Lotto Nixia Short are just a few examples.

We all love a cute tennis dress, but finding matching tights to go underneath can be tricky. Thankfully, adidas makes it easy. Both their Adizero Dress (5) and Stella McCartney Barricade Dress (2) come with matching detached ball shorts.

While there are many cute dresses, skirts, and shorts that come with built-in tights or ball shorts, some don’t come with anything at all. In that case, there are a few perfect options like the Nike Women’s Slam Printed Tennis Short (4) or the Nike Women’s Slam Tennis Shorts (1). Both will give you a pop of color, great coverage and the tennis ball storage you’re seeking. The In-Between Women’s Wide Band Low Rise Tennis Shorties White is another basic option that will look great no matter your tennis style.

If you are looking for more of a panty instead of a tight, the Fancy Pants apparel line is the place to look. The Fancy Pants Women’s Double Ballpocket (2) features a full cut panty that provides full coverage and comfort at all times. The side pockets on the panties provide safe storage for tennis balls, while making them easily accessible. Another similar panty that provides excellent coverage is the Fancy Pants Women’s Single Ballpocket (6). It features a single pocket sewn to the left seam for easy access to tennis balls, and a compression fit for secure storage.

If you don’t think a tight or a panty is the right choice for you, don’t give up just yet. The Gamma Color Love Cup (5)  is a stylish and secure accessory that typically goes on the elastic band of any skirt or short – just clip in your extra tennis ball! It comes in red, green, blue, and clear, and will have you looking sporty this fall season. The Babolat Tennis Ball Clip White is another option (3).

We may not get pockets on all of our gear like the guys, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Ball shorts and accessories get the job done and look cute and stylish in the process!
