Playing Pink During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Athletes across America are playing pink this month and all for a good cause. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it’s a great time to show support by adding a touch of pink to the court.  It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or dramatic and Tennis Express has a wide selection to choose from. Likewise, if you’re looking for a new pair of pink tennis shoes, pink apparel, or even pink overgrips, we’ve got the best pink gear, in stock and ready to ship.

In addition to playing pink, tennis clubs and facilities are organizing fundraisers to raise awareness about early detection. Willow Fork Country Club in Houston, TX hosted a Pretty in Pink tennis and golf tournament where the proceeds went to a local non-profit that provides screening and treatment plans to underprivileged women.

Unfortunately, tennis players are not exempt from this deadly disease. Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S. and 2.3 million people worldwide. Annual screenings are recommended for those age 40 and up, and the most common risk factor is genetics.

Tennis legend, Martina Navratilova, was treated for breast cancer in 2010. After a three month treatment plan, she was dubbed cancer-free. However, earlier this year she was diagnosed with a recurrence and throat cancer.  Applying her tenacious spirit, she fought and was declared cancer free in June 2023.

Former American tennis superstar Chrissy Evert was diagnosed with Stage 1 ovarian cancer in 2022. The 68-year-old has won 18 major singles titles during her career, including a record seven French Open titles. After chemotherapy and a hysterectomy, she earned a new title, survivor. Because she inherited the BRCA1 gene, a variant that increases the odds of being diagnosed with breast cancer by 72%, she also had a mastectomy. Chrissy has been cancer-free since Jan. 2023. playing pink
Mary Joe Fernandez is also a breast cancer survivor. Having won multiple Grand Slam doubles titles along with two Olympic Gold medals, her battle began after a routine mammogram discovered a lump in 2017. She successfully completed treatment in New York and now calls matches from the sidelines for ESPN Network.
