Camila Giorgi is known to always go for the flashy winner, even when she’s playing out of a hole against great players like Garbine Muguruza. On tennis’s biggest stage at Wimbledon facing the French Open champion, she continued to aim for lines and aces. After losing a tight third set, eye contact was clearly a challenge for her when she met Muguruza at the net. But that’s okay. Camila’s not looking for friends, she’s looking for wins. In fact her Instagram page, managed by the player herself, displays the quote “Love me or hate me, both are in my favor…If you love me, I’ll always be in your heart…If you hate me, I’ll always be in your mind.”
We certainly know she’s on the mind of the Italian Tennis Federation as they made decisions about which players will represent Italy in Rio at the 2016 Olympics. The Federation has been disappointed that she’s leaving her Fed Cup Team in a lurch as she chooses to play tournaments like the Porsche Grand Prix. As a result, Giorgi did not make the trip to Rio. But make no mistake, tennis companies are still excited about Camila’s future winnings. In fact, tennis giant Babolat continues to sponsor Giorgi, providing her with the brand’s flagship shoes, racquet, and bag to use on court.
Camila is a dangerous player, and a lot of top players don’t like to play her in the early rounds. She’s aggressive, unafraid, and plays like she has nothing to lose. That kind of hunger is fun to watch, and helps her draw fan support in live matches. Everyone loves the underdog story and somehow, a young beautiful Italian tennis talent has become exactly that to tennis fans around the world. And if she gets the odd question from the press every once in a while about finances or federations? Well, we get the feeling that none of that negative attention really bothers Giorgi. After all, she’ll still be on your mind!
