As the top seeds kept falling like a set of dominoes at Wimbledon this year, a 24th Grand Slam victory for Serena Williams looked entirely possible, inevitable even. She hadn’t had the perfect tournament, but she marched on to her first Wimbledon final post maternity-leave as we watched with bated breath to see if she’d create history…again.
Enter Angelique Kerber: 2-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one. After losing to Williams in the Wimbledon final of 2016, the year she won both of her Grand Slam titles, this was a quest to seek redemption and restore her former glory. She had had a near-perfect tournament, dropping just one set, and we wondered if that was about to change.
What followed was unexpected: a confident Kerber broke Williams thrice in the first set. Williams’ solid ground strokes were no match against Kerber’s precision and aggression. The latter decisively brought the 23-time Grand Slam winner to her knees to claim her very first Wimbledon title.
What we saw from Kerber that day, and the fortnight before, is everything that the new adidas Rule#9 Collection stands for: unexpected brilliance, a defiance of odds, and a strong sense of confidence in one’s self.
The apparel line, sported by other big names like Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Jelena Ostapenko, departs from conventional silhouettes, features eye-catching patterns and vivid colors and is all about belief in one’s creative self. It puts a modern spin on the traditional 80’s style to reinforce their theme: break rules and create new traditions.
You’ll see the players wearing these pieces at the tournaments leading up to the US Open.
Alexander Zverev will be wearing the adidas Seasonal Polo in vibrant Hi-Res Aqua with dark blue and a festive pop of pink. He will pair it with the Seasonal Short in White. The color blocking on the short ties it together with the shirt, but keeps things simple so that the polo stands out as the hero of the outfit.
Pictured here is Angelique Kerber sporting the same colors as Zverev. She’s pairing the Seasonal Tank in Hi-Res Aqua with the Seasonal Skirt in Legend Ink. For practice, Angie has chosen this Seasonal Tank, also in Hi-Res Aqua, with the Seasonal Short in Legend Ink.
The tank is available in White and Legend Ink, too.
Dominic Thiem is wearing the Seasonal Polo in White and Shocking Pink with white Seasonal Bermudas for a look that’s both clean and sophisticated. Tomas Berdych will sport the same look.
Lucas Pouille, on the other hand, has chosen the Seasonal Tee in the vibrant Shock Pink color with blue and yellow hues for a statement-making outfit. For practice, he will wear the adidas Seasonal Tee in Aqua.
Jelena Ostapenko and Kristina Mladenovic have opted for the same color scheme with the Seasonal Tee in Shock Pink and the Seasonal Short in White. With the crop top look, adidas mimics the tucked-in style of the 80’s while adding a new-age twist.
