How to Prevent Blisters on Your Feet

Korean tennis star suffers from a foot blister

Tennis is a high impact sport with continual lateral movements. High impact exercise causes the shoes to rub against the skin, which creates friction. Friction can then damage the skin and lead to the formation of painful blisters.

Enduring friction from shoes is inevitable when matches extend to a third set. However, there are steps you can take to help prevent blisters from developing. Here are some of our tips for preventing blisters on your feet.

Wear Moisture-Wicking Socks

Friction blisters often occur on the tips of toes and heels, but you can protect your skin with proper socks. Acrylic and moisture-wicking socks, for example, are better at preventing blisters than cotton socks. There are a variety of performance socks that can ensure comfort and support for your feet.

Keep your feet cool and dry with the Feetures Elite Light Cushion Quarter Tennis Socks. These low ankle socks feature moisture-wicking fabric and high density cushioning that will protect areas of high impact. If you prefer crew length tennis socks, consider the Thorlo Experia ProLite Crew Cut Socks or the Nike Court Multiplier Cushioned Socks to aid in blister reduction.

Wear Properly Fitted Tennis Shoes

In addition to wearing moisture-wicking tennis socks, it’s crucial to have proper shoes. First, have a shoe specialist measure your foot to get the proper shoe size. If you’re ready to buy new shoes, keep in mind that the shoe should fit your foot and not the other way around.

Some players have experienced blisters when they wear new shoes. To break in your new kicks, wear them for short periods at first. Then, keep them on for longer intervals as time passes. There are also different lacing techniques that can limit the slide in your tennis shoes.

Other Blister Prevention Tips

Here are some other things you can do to prevent blisters:

  • The USTA recommends changing your socks frequently during a match to limit moisture buildup. Players that sweat frequently should definitely consider changing socks every set to keep their feet dry.
  • Make sure your feet are dry before putting on your socks and shoes. Nothing is worse than putting your wet feet back into your wet shoes. Wet feet = disaster for you!
  • Using foot powder between your toes decreases moisture in the skin, and helps reduce the risk of blisters.

Blister Treatment and Care

If a blister forms, you can continue to play as long as you protect the inflamed area. I’ve had to take a few days off due to a high level of discomfort from a foot blister. It’s different for everyone, but you should adhere to these general guidelines:

  1. Avoid popping the blister as it could get infected.
  2. If the blister bursts on its own, don’t pick the layer of skin off.
  3. Pad the blister with gauze and wrap it with athletic tape.
  4. After your match, re-expose the blister and allow it to dry out.
