Kim Clijsters: Down but Not Out

Kim Clijsters

Former world No. 1 in both singles and doubles withdrew from the Miami Open. While Kim Clijsters and many tennis fans are bummed by the withdrawal, she says that she hasn’t given up. A mother of 3 and a winner of 41 singles including 4 Grand Slam titles, she is known as one of the best in tennis. She announced the sad news this past Sunday. This four-time major winner has undergone a knee operation in October and contracted COVID-19 in January, thwarting her practices. Since she hasn’t adequately prepared for the Miami Open she’s decided to postpone her return to the courts.

2020-2021 New Challenges

Many players have been feeling the tension that COVID-19 has caused. During the Australian Open, some players had to train for the tournament in their hotel rooms due to quarantine.  Through it all though, Kim Clijsters says she’s not going to quit:

“It’s disappointing and frustrating. I knew this was going to be hard when I started this journey – and there have been challenges that are out of my control. I’m not ready to quit…I’m going to keep pushing and see what’s possible.”

While she is unable to participate, she is still grateful for the wild card opportunity. The year is still young and even so, there will be other years for her comeback. With the support of her fans, there are bound to be more opportunities for her later on.

Kim Clijsters’ Third Comeback

Her first retirement was in 2007 and she came back in 2009 and won the US Open for a second time as a wildcard. After winning the Flushing Meadows in 2010 and joining the Australian Open, she retired again in 2012. Since then she has only played 3 tournaments and 3 matches in 2020 and was beaten each time. Still a major WTA Champion with 41 singles, we all have high hopes for her in her next appearance. In her announcement of her withdrawal, Clijsters said she will undergo some pain management and then decide on what to do about her future schedule. However, she still wishes Miami and Charleston teams the best with their events.
