Usually, it takes years to make history, but sometimes it happens overnight. That’s exactly what happened in Melbourne Park, during the 2023 Australian Open, Men’s Final. Novak Djokovic defeated the Greek gallant, Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, making him the first male player to hold 10 titles at the AO. In addition to that record, Novak is now tied with Rafael Nadal for most Grand Slam Men’s Singles Titles of all time, 22 to be exact. That’s two more than Roger Federer, eight more than Pete Sampras, and 11 more than Bjorn Borg.
Novak also reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in the world for the seventh time in his 20-year career. Contrary to the way he normally addresses the crowd after a center-court victory, where he makes a funnel from his heart to the audience, he pointed to his head and then at his heart. This win was about him playing smart and playing with passion.
Climbing into his box, he embraced his family and team. Overwhelmed with emotion, he burst into tears as he savored the monumental moment.
During the awards ceremony, with the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup in his arms, he expressed gratitude to his family, event organizers, and fans. He also challenged young players by saying, “Dare to dream big”, and recognized the accomplishments he and Stef have made for their relatively smaller countries.
Novak’s Next Matches
If you missed Novak during the AO, don’t worry, you’ll get a few more opportunities to see him in action. Despite a lingering hamstring injury he is expected to play the hardcourts in Dubai from Feb. 27 through March 4. Indian Wells and the Miami Open are also on his agenda. Both are held in March but will depend on whether or not the U.S. changes its vaccination status for foreign travelers.
While it’s unclear if he’ll make Monte-Carlo in April, this is the event where he would typically kick off the clay-court season as he counts down to Roland-Garros. Depending on how he’s playing, the French Open could be another opportunity to influence history.
