Novak's New Shoe - The ASICS Court FF 2

Ever since returning from his elbow surgery in 2018, Novak Djokovic has been on fire. His quick resurgence took many onlookers by surprise, which made his rush back to the ATP #1 ranking appear even more unbelievable. The now 15-time major champion has won the last 3 grand slam events, and is poised to make even more noise as we enter the spring 2019 season. What’s changed? Surprisingly a lot, and not in the way you might think. Unlike many top tennis players, Novak has proven to be extremely versatile with his equipment without missing a beat. He won Wimbledon, switched to a new version of his HEAD Speed racquet, won the US Open, switched to new ASICS shoes, and then won the Australian Open. During that stretch, it seems like all that hadn’t changed was the man himself. He finally recaptured the mindset and bill of health that propelled him to the top of the sport for much of his career.

Another logical question would be: What’s so remarkable about Novak switching shoes? Perhaps the best way to approach this is to think back to the last time a world #1 switched to completely new shoes. Pretty difficult, right? We’re not talking about going from one shoe to an updated version from the same family. Novak officially switched from his immensely popular Gel-Resolution 7s to brand new Court FF 2s. Talk about a vote of confidence in ASICS. The Gel-Resolution 7, to this point, has been one of the highest-performing tennis shoes on the market.

New ASICS Court FF 2 Novaks

The Court FF 2 has a completely different construction than the Gel-Resolution 7, which highlights the resourcefulness of Novak as a player, and his uncommon willingness to switch gear while already performing out of his mind. As you probably guessed, the Court FF 2 is the next iteration of the relatively misunderstood Gel-Court FF from early 2018. It’s what I like to call a hybrid shoe, as it fits somewhere between traditional matchday and durability shoes (learn more on this here). Like many brand new things, it took this second iteration to really hit the nail on the head. The Court FF 2 keeps much of the same technology from the Gel-Court FF, such as a FlyteFoam midsole, Twistruss stabilization system, and Mono-Sock construction; however, it also comes with a completely re-engineered upper, modified outsole, and other tweaks.

Right now, the ASICS Court FF 2 is in extremely limited supply, but the brand from Japan has plans to expand the line with multiple new colorways soon. When it does drop in larger volume, you can check it out at Tennis Express. Until then, we can all enjoy watching Novak take his new shoes for a joyride through the 2019 season.
