Sam Querrey Makes Successful Visit to Tennis Express

One of the yearly highlights at Tennis Express comes in early April, when the US Men’s Clay Court Championships are played in our hometown of Houston, TX. The ATP 250 event always brings big tennis stars to the city, and it’s no surprise that they’re eager to check out Tennis Express and the treasure trove of tennis gear we have to offer. This year, world #14 Sam Querrey paid us a visit the day before he was scheduled to play his first match at River Oaks Country Club. Querrey, who was seeded second in the tournament, had a career-best season in 2017. He reached his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon months after capturing the championship in Acapulco, in runs that included wins over Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal.

A Crowd Gathers at Tennis Express to See Sam Querrey

As the crowd waited patiently for their chance to get a photo and autograph, Querrey entered the store and began a question-and-answer session with Grace Carter of Tennis Now. He spoke of his fondness for the Houston tournament (citing its intimate, old-school stadium as a big plus), reminisced on his friendly rivalry with John Isner, and spilled some details on his upcoming wedding to his longtime girlfriend (unfortunately, there wasn’t enough room on the guest list for him to invite us).

Querrey took the time to meet everyone in the long line of fans individually, greeting them with an enthusiastic smile. Although his campaign at the tournament didn’t go as he hoped — he lost in the second round to Guido Pella in a close three-set match — the setback shouldn’t derail the strong season he’s had so far. It’s always special to meet star athletes in person, and it’s even better when they’re kind and gracious throughout. We’re grateful to Sam for taking time out of his busy tournament schedule to spend time at Tennis Express, and we’d like to thank Babolat for sponsoring the event.

We’re disappointed that the Clay Court Championships are over for 2018 (congratulations to Steve Johnson, who backed up last year’s championship with a second straight title), but we’re excited for some of the ATP’s best pros to return next year. In the meantime, stop by Tennis Express to check out Sam Querrey’s Babolat racquet and much more great gear for your tennis game.
